Lateral reading means leaving a page to check what independent sources say about it. Here's how the method works, a real example, and how it compares to reading vertically.
Lateral reading is a way to evaluate online information by leaving the page you’re reading and checking what other sources say about it. Instead of asking only “Does this page look trustworthy?”, lateral reading asks “What do reliable sources outside this page say about it?”
That shift sounds small, but it changes what you’re able to find out. A publisher controls everything on its own pages. It has no control over what independent sources say about it.

Lateral reading is a source-evaluation technique where you leave the webpage you’re assessing and open other sources to investigate who is behind it, whether its claims are supported, and how other reliable sources describe it.
In practice, you stop judging an unfamiliar site from the inside. Its design, its About page, its author bio, its domain name and the citations it chooses to display were all written or selected by the publisher. Lateral reading replaces them with information the publisher didn’t produce: what independent outlets, researchers, institutions and records say about the site, the author and the claim.
One clarification matters. Lateral reading is not “find several articles that say the same thing.” What you’re checking is independence, reputation, original evidence and the relationships between sources. Three articles are not three confirmations if all three trace back to the same press release.
The term comes from research by Sam Wineburg and Sarah McGrew, who studied how different groups evaluate unfamiliar websites. They compared professional fact-checkers with university historians and first-year college students, recording each group’s screen as they worked.
The historians and students stayed on the page they were given, reading top to bottom and weighing its appearance, stated mission and internal references. The fact-checkers scanned briefly, then left and opened new tabs to find what the wider web said about the organization, the author and the claims.
That behavior became known as lateral reading, and it was built into the Civic Online Reasoning curriculum from the Digital Inquiry Group. Later studies found that teaching it measurably improved how students judged online sources.
The finding is worth restating plainly: the group that read less of the original page reached better conclusions about it, faster.
Lateral reading runs as a short sequence you can complete in a few minutes.
Before reading the article from top to bottom, pause and ask:
The pause matters most when a claim would change a decision you’re about to make, or when the headline is doing more work than the evidence behind it.
This is the core lateral-reading move. Open a new tab and search the publication name, the organization, the author, or the funding behind it.
Useful searches look like:
[website name][website name] reputation[organization name] funding[author name]What matters is the direction of travel: you’re looking for what others say about the source rather than what the source says about itself. An About page is context, not evidence.
Now check the claim itself against independent reporting, academic sources, official statistics, recognized organizations or subject-matter experts.
Then ask the question that does most of the work: are these genuinely independent sources? Counting matching pages tells you how widely something has been repeated, which is a separate question from how well it’s supported.
If the article rests on a study, survey, statistic or quote, find the original. Check whether it says what the article claims, whether the figure has been separated from its context, whether the date matches, and whether the methodology supports the interpretation.
The whole sequence: Leave → Investigate → Compare → Trace
Here’s the method applied to a claim that circulates constantly in productivity writing:
“The American Psychological Association found that multitasking can reduce productivity by up to 40%.”
The page carrying that sentence is a September 2024 blog post, “Distraction Danger: The Alarming Truth About Multitasking.” It lists three pieces of research — Stanford, the University of London, and the APA — and presents the 40% figure as a finding from APA research into the “time cost” of task-switching. None of the three is linked or cited.
A search on the domain shows it belongs to Optimum Staffing Solutions, a logistics and industrial staffing agency. The post ends in recruitment calls to action, and the page’s meta description still describes defensive driving, left over from an earlier article.
So the publisher is a staffing company producing safety content for drivers and warehouse staff. That doesn’t make the claim false, and thousands of business blogs carry the same figure. It does tell you the site is one more place the claim has landed, not anywhere near its origin.
Searching the claim returns hundreds of pages: consultancies, university study-skills pages, newsletters, LinkedIn posts. At first glance that looks like overwhelming confirmation. Their citations tell a different story. Almost all point back to the same APA article, Multitasking: Switching costs, published in 2006. Several cite each other. A few cite nothing.
The volume is large. The number of independent sources is close to one.
Opening the APA page changes the picture. It’s a research summary rather than a study. It describes task-switching experiments, including work by Rubinstein, Meyer and Evans in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance (2001), which measured switch costs of a few tenths of a second per switch.
The 40% figure appears in a different register. The APA page attributes it to psychologist David Meyer, who said brief mental blocks from shifting between tasks can cost as much as 40 percent of someone’s productive time. That’s an upper-bound estimate from one researcher, several steps removed from a measured workplace result.
The claim comes out partly supported and commonly distorted. Research on switching costs is real and peer-reviewed. But “the APA found in a study that multitasking cuts productivity by 40%” misstates three things at once: the APA published a summary rather than conducting the study, the figure is an estimated ceiling rather than an average, and the experiments behind it measured reaction times on lab tasks rather than output at work.
Lateral reading didn’t prove the claim wrong. It gave the number a shape: where it came from, what it originally described, and how much weight it can carry. That’s the realistic outcome most of the time.
Vertical reading means staying inside one page and judging it from what’s there: the wording, the citations it provides, the author information, the design, the About page.

Vertical reading has its place. You need it to follow an argument or read a report closely. Problems start when it substitutes for external verification on an unfamiliar source, since everything you’re weighing was put there by the party you’re evaluating.
The workflow that solves this: read laterally to establish context and credibility, then read vertically when the source turns out to be worth deeper attention.
A polished website can tell you what it wants you to know about itself. Lateral reading adds the part it cannot control: what other sources say about it.
It also saves time. There’s little reason to read a 3,000-word article closely before knowing who published it, and in the example above two minutes of checking changed how much weight the whole page deserved. That’s the practical payoff — not a verdict on truth, but a realistic sense of how much confidence a source has earned.
Reach for it with unfamiliar websites, viral claims, statistics presented without context, product and health claims, AI-generated answers, and any source you’re considering citing in academic or professional work.
You don’t need to run this on every sentence you read. A reasonable rule is proportional verification: the higher the stakes or the less familiar the source, the more verification it deserves.

Lateral reading shows up most visibly in Investigate the source and Find better coverage, both of which require leaving the page. But SIFT is broader: it also builds in pausing before you engage and tracing evidence to its origin.
The two are related without being identical. Lateral reading is the technique of stepping outside a source; SIFT is one practical framework that organizes it into repeatable moves. It isn’t the only way to read laterally, and the terms aren’t synonyms.
Most guidance on lateral reading was written for websites. The same logic applies to AI assistants, which deliver answers in a form that skips the source-evaluation step entirely.
An AI answer doesn’t become a source because it sounds confident, includes citations, or offers links. Those are presentation features, and the model controls all of them, much as a website controls its own About page.
The sequence above transfers directly, with one adjustment: start by pulling out the load-bearing claim rather than evaluating the whole answer. Open the cited source, since the linked page sometimes says something adjacent to the claim rather than the claim. Then find a source that isn’t downstream of the first, and trace any statistic or quote to its original context.
Say an assistant tells you “a 2025 study found that X.” Worth checking: that the paper exists, that the authors and year match, that its finding really is X, and that a hedged conclusion hasn’t been flattened into a firm one.
None of this makes AI answers unusable for research. It’s the same habit applied to a newer surface.
AI can speed up lateral reading, but it should not replace the judgment that makes lateral reading useful.
The mechanical parts are where it helps: summarizing a source, pulling out its claims, spotting the names worth checking, finding additional coverage, comparing pages, surfacing disagreements. The evaluative part — deciding which sources deserve trust and whether the evidence supports the claim — stays with you.
1. Trusting the first search result. High placement signals relevance and optimization, and says little about whether the publisher is reliable.
2. Mistaking repetition for corroboration. In the example above, hundreds of pages carried the same figure and nearly all drew it from one summary.
3. Using the site’s own About page as proof of credibility. It’s useful context about how the publisher wants to be seen, which is a different thing from evidence.
4. Looking only for material that confirms your first impression. Search for broader coverage of the claim rather than for agreement with it.
5. Stopping at a secondary source. With statistics, studies and quotes, the summary is where distortion usually enters. Go one level further back.
